Weather that changes with elevation and the volcano
The region combines warm lowlands, rural roads, hot spring areas, humid forests, and mountain sectors. That is why the weather can change noticeably over short distances: a sunny morning near lower communities can feel cool and cloudy as you approach Tenorio, Miravalles, or Rincón de la Vieja.
In general, the driest season runs from December to April, with clearer days, better conditions for viewpoints, and more stable roads. The rainy season usually runs from May to November; it brings greener landscapes, stronger rivers, and rainy afternoons, especially in forested and higher-elevation areas.
The coolest areas are usually higher up, along forest trails, around Río Celeste, and in mountain sectors near the volcanoes. Warmer areas appear in lower communities, open routes, and places with less forest cover. Rincón de la Vieja can feel drier and sunnier in some sectors, while Tenorio tends to offer more humid and cooler environments.
For comfortable travel, it helps to leave early, bring a light rain layer, wear shoes with good grip, and carry dry clothes if visiting waterfalls, hot springs, or trails. The best plan is to treat the weather as part of the experience: clear morning light, clouds over the mountains, rain cooling the forest, and sunsets that change quickly.
