Baird's tapir

Baird's tapir is Costa Rica's largest native land mammal. It has a heavy body, grayish-brown coat, pale-edged ears and a flexible trunk-like nose used to explore leaves, fruits and shoots.

Description

Tapirus bairdii

This humid-forest herbivore is often associated with rivers and streams. It can exceed 2 m in length and reach around 300 kg. Its diet includes leaves, stems, fruits, seeds and bark, helping move seeds through the forest. Although active by day or night, it is usually discreet and depends on connected forest corridors.
